Finally Feeling Better!
Brooks gave us quite a scare last weekend. He began running a fever Saturday night - out of the blue. By Sunday afternoon it was up to 105, but with no other symptoms. After calling Children's Hospital, we put him in the tub and kept giving him Motrin and Tylenol. Later in the afternoon it jumped back up to 105 again and the hospital said to take him to the emergency room. Of course it was their busiest night and we waited forever, but we finally saw the doctor. They ran a chest x-ray, checked his oxygen levels, and did some blood cultures. At midnight he still hada fever of 104.9, but no other symptoms. The bloodwork came back and they discovered that his white blood count was 24,000 about 15,000 more than normal. The doctor determined that he had a bacterial infection. He was given a shot of rucefin (sp?) and his termperature came down to 103.5. At 1:00 am we were sent home and had to visit our pediatrician the next morning. Dr. Bean put Brooks on a high powered antibiotic. He has kept a low grade fever for several days and he still is not back to his old self, but we can tell he feels better everyday. They called from the doctor's office yesterday and said that they had discovered that Brooks was severely anemic. We have to go next week for more bloodwork so they can determine how much iron he needs to take each day. They said that this could be one reason that he has been sick so much lately. The anemia can lower his immune system.
